Blackheads: what actually helps, and what makes them worse
11 October 2026
They are not dirt and they do not scrub off. What they actually are, and why squeezing and pore strips bring them back faster.
The first thing to correct: a blackhead is not dirt. If it were dirt it would wash off.
What they actually are
A pore filled with oil and dead skin cells. The black is not a colour but oxidation — the surface is open to the air and darkens, the same way a cut apple does. That is why scrubbing does not help: the problem is inside the pore, not on top of it.
Why squeezing brings them back faster
Squeezing may empty the pore, but it stretches it and inflames what is around it. A wider pore fills faster, and the inflammation leaves a mark that outlives the blackhead. Worse, squeezing with fingernails pushes some of it further in.
And pore strips?
They lift what is on the surface and leave the pore empty and open — so it refills within days. Useful once before an occasion. Not a treatment.
What actually helps
- Regular cleansing, twice a day, without going overboard
- Limited exfoliation across the week, dissolving what blocks the pore rather than scrubbing at it
- Ingredients that go into the pore rather than pass over it
- Moisture — dry skin produces more oil, not less, and that loop catches a lot of people
The commonest mistake
Punishing the skin by drying it out. A strong wash, then another wash, then alcohol: the result is skin that is dry on top and oily underneath, and more oil, not less.
About the ampoule we sell
The Dr. Melaxin black rice ampoule sits in the gentle exfoliating category and is used after cleansing. The bottle is 80 ml. Its packaging carries a chart from the manufacturer's own study; we do not repeat those figures here, because we did not run it and cannot stand behind it. What we can tell you is what it is and how much is in it.
And when this is out of scope
If spots are inflamed, painful and leaving marks, that is not an exfoliation question — it is a dermatologist question. No product on a shelf treats that, and anyone saying otherwise is selling you something.
Common questions
- Are blackheads dirt?
- No. They are pores filled with oil and dead skin cells, and the black comes from the surface oxidising in air. That is why scrubbing does not remove them — the problem is inside the pore.
- Should I squeeze blackheads?
- Better not. Squeezing stretches the pore and inflames the skin around it, so it refills faster and leaves a mark that outlasts the blackhead.
- Does moisturising make blackheads worse?
- No — usually the opposite. Dry skin produces more oil to compensate, so drying the skin out as a punishment makes the problem worse rather than better.
