Cash on delivery: how it works, and when the order actually arrives

Why cash on delivery is still the most used option in Saudi, and what happens between pressing the button and the driver arriving.
Cash on delivery is not an old habit or a hesitation about technology. It is a practical answer to one problem: trusting a shop you have not bought from before.
What happens after the order
- The order arrives and is given a number. That number is what you track everything with afterwards
- A message confirms the amount, the city and the payment method
- The order is packed and handed to the courier with a tracking number
- The driver calls before arriving
Why we ask for one word instead of a phone call
The usual way to confirm a cash-on-delivery order is to telephone the customer. It is the slowest step in the whole process and it suits nobody — not someone at work, not someone driving. A WhatsApp message with the amount, the city and the payment method, and the word "yes", is enough. That can save a full day.
What if you do not reply
The order is not cancelled automatically. No reply is not a good enough reason to put stock back on a shelf, and we follow up another way. The reverse holds too: the word "no" does not cancel anything automatically — a person reads it, because a wrong cancellation is far harder to undo than a wrong confirmation.
When it arrives
Packed within 24 to 48 hours, delivered in 3 to 7 working days after that. The word "working" matters: Thursday evening usually means Sunday, not Saturday.
The amount paid to the driver
It is what the order page showed you, and nothing more. It is printed on the parcel itself so there is no discussion at the door. And if an order is already paid, no amount is printed at all — a prepaid parcel never leaves with a demand for cash attached.
Returns
Fifteen days. The only condition is that the item is in its condition. This applies to cash-on-delivery orders exactly as it does to any other.
And what never happens
Nobody will ask you for a card number over the phone. Nobody will ask you to transfer money to a personal account. If a call or a message asks for that in a shop's name, it is not the shop.
