Dust mites: why washing the sheets is not enough
22 September 2026
They live in the mattress, not the sheets, which is why a hot wash changes little. What they feed on, and what reduces them in a Saudi bedroom.
Sheets get washed. The mattress does not. That is the whole problem: mites do not live on the sheet, they live in the first layer of the mattress and pillow, where the moisture and the skin cells we leave every night are.
Why it is worse here
- Dust comes into the house all year and settles in fabric before any hard surface
- Constant air conditioning means closed windows and air circulating over itself
- Mattresses get used for years without once being cleaned from the inside
What is not enough
- Changing sheets alone — it removes what is on top, not what is under
- Fabric sprays and fresheners — they cover the smell and remove nothing
- Putting the mattress in the sun — it cuts moisture, but does not pull anything out
What works
Strong suction applied directly to the mattress surface. The power matters because the job is pulling out what has settled inside the weave, not sweeping what sits on it.
How to do it properly
- Slowly. Suction needs contact time with the fibres; a quick pass lifts only the surface
- Work top to bottom in overlapping lines
- Do the pillows and the duvet too — they are closer to a face than the mattress is
- Empty the cup after every bed; a full cup is the most common reason suction drops
- Rinse the filter in cold water and let it dry completely; a damp filter smells within a day
How often?
Every fortnight for a mattress, weekly for pillows if anyone in the house has allergies. After the first pass you will understand why — what ends up in the cup answers the question.
Common questions
- Is washing the sheets enough to get rid of dust mites?
- No. Mites live inside the first layer of the mattress and pillow; washing a sheet removes only what is on top. The mattress itself needs to be vacuumed directly.
- How often should a mattress be cleaned?
- Every fortnight for the mattress, and weekly for pillows if anyone in the house has allergies.
- Why does the suction get weaker over time?
- Usually a full cup or a dirty filter. Empty the cup after every bed, and rinse the filter in cold water, drying it completely before it goes back.
