Peeling, ampoule, overnight mask — three names, three different jobs

11 October 2026

Korean skincare names sound interchangeable and are not. What each type does, when it is used — and why two of them do not belong on the same night.

A Korean skincare shelf is full of words that sound like synonyms: peeling, ampoule, wrapping mask, shot. They are not synonyms, and confusing them is why people end up using three products that do the same thing and none of the one they are missing.

Peeling — removes

Its job is to take off the surface layer of dead skin. It is used a limited number of times a week, not daily, because overdoing it leaves skin sensitive and red instead of clean. Body peeling is not face peeling: body skin is thicker, its products are stronger, and they do not go on the face.

An ampoule — delivers

An ampoule is a concentrated formula in a relatively small bottle, used after cleansing and before cream. It is not a replacement for moisturiser but a step before it — moisturiser seals, an ampoule delivers. Used alone, the ingredients evaporate before they settle.

An overnight mask — seals

It goes on last and stays until morning. Its job is to close over whatever is underneath and stop water evaporating through the night. That is why it is called wrapping: the idea is a wrapper, not a treatment. One or two nights a week, not every night.

The order that does not fail

  • Cleanse
  • Ampoule
  • Moisturiser
  • Overnight mask, on the nights you use it

What does not belong on the same night

Peeling and a strong ampoule together. Peeling leaves skin exposed, and an active on top of it lands harder than it should. Put them on different nights. If skin stings or looks red after peeling, the next night is for moisture only.

Why we quote no percentages and no results

You will see numbers on packaging in this category: such-and-such improved by a percentage after two weeks. Those are the manufacturer's own studies on a small group. We did not run them and cannot stand behind them. What we state is what is in the bottle and how much — the ampoule is 80 ml, the mask 75 ml — and the rest is what your skin does.

Before anything else

Any new product goes on a small patch first. And skin that is inflamed or actively reacting is not where peeling starts.

Common questions

What is the difference between an ampoule and a moisturiser?
An ampoule is a concentrated formula used after cleansing and before cream; its job is to deliver. A moisturiser comes after and seals that in. An ampoule does not replace a moisturiser.
How often should I use a peeling product?
A limited number of times a week, not daily. Overdoing it leaves skin sensitive and red. Body peeling is stronger than face peeling and does not go on the face.
Can I use peeling and an ampoule on the same night?
Better not. Peeling leaves skin exposed, so an active on top lands harder than it should. Use them on different nights, and if skin is red, the next night is for moisture only.
