The order of a skincare routine — and why the wrong order wastes half of it

14 October 2026

The only rule you need: thinnest to thickest. Why a cream before a serum blocks it, and how few steps are actually enough.

A ten-step routine in the wrong order is worse than three steps in the right one. The reason is simple: each layer decides what can get through after it.

The only rule

Thinnest to thickest. Water before oil, liquid before cream. The moment you put something thick on, you have closed the door on everything that comes after it.

Morning order

  • Cleanser
  • Toner or essence, if you use one
  • Serum or ampoule
  • Moisturiser
  • Sunscreen — always last

Night order

  • Makeup remover, then cleanser
  • Exfoliation — only on the nights set aside for it, not every night
  • Serum or ampoule
  • Moisturiser
  • Overnight mask, on the nights you use it

Sunscreen is last, with no exceptions

It works as a layer on the surface. Anything put on top of it thins it or breaks it up. Makeup is an acceptable exception because it is not skincare, but a moisturiser over sunscreen means sunscreen that is half there.

And why wait between layers?

Because a wet layer mixes what is above it with what is below instead of letting it through. A minute between steps is enough — no more is needed, and a long wait dries the skin so it absorbs less.

How few steps are enough?

Three: cleanser, moisturiser, sunscreen. That is a complete routine and it works. Everything after that is an addition for a specific aim — marks, lines, pores — not a requirement. People who start with ten steps abandon the whole thing within a month.

The mistake that undoes all of it

Starting three new products in one week. When skin reacts you will not know which one did it, and you will drop all three. One new product every two weeks, with a patch test first.

And what does not go together

Exfoliation and a retinoid on the same night. Or any two strong actives at the beginning. Strength is not cumulative here — more means irritation, not a faster result.

Common questions

What order should a skincare routine follow?
Thinnest to thickest: cleanser, then toner, then serum or ampoule, then moisturiser, and sunscreen last in the morning. A thick layer blocks whatever comes after it.
Does moisturiser go before or after sunscreen?
Before. Sunscreen is always last because it works as a layer on the surface, and anything on top of it thins it or breaks it up.
How many steps does a routine actually need?
Three is enough: cleanser, moisturiser, sunscreen. Anything beyond that is an addition for a specific aim, not a requirement — and people who start with ten steps usually abandon the lot within a month.
