3-in-1 charger: flat or upright? The difference is not the shape
11 October 2026
Both charge an iPhone, a watch and AirPods from one cable. The real difference is where it lives, and whether you need the screen while it charges.
The question we get about three-in-one chargers is almost never about watts. It is: which one? And the answer has nothing to do with the specification — it is about where the charger is going to sit.
What they share
Three magnetic pads — one for the phone, one for an Apple Watch, one for AirPods. 15W, a single USB-C cable, and each one folds into a single piece. On what they charge and how fast, there is nothing between them.
The flat one, and when it suits
It opens out into a strip of three pads and the phone lies down. That suits a bedside table: the screen is not shining at your face, and nothing is standing up to be knocked over in the night. Folded, it is about the size of a card wallet — which is the shape that travels in a pocket rather than taking up a bag. If the charger is going in a suitcase, this is the one.
The upright one, and when it suits
It holds the phone at eye level. The difference shows up in daylight, not at night: a call arrives and you can see who it is without picking the phone up, a video plays while it charges, the clock is readable across a room overnight. On a desk you sit at for hours, upright is clearly the more useful. A flat pad asks you to lift the phone to see anything at all.
How to decide in one line
- Bedside, travel, or it lives in a bag → flat
- Desk, kitchen counter, anywhere you pass it standing up → upright
What both need and neither includes
A power adapter. The charger arrives with a USB-C cable, but the plug itself is not part of the box with most suppliers, and we have not claimed it because we do not know it for these exact units. A recent iPhone or iPad adapter is enough.
About the case
Magnetic charging works through most cases, but not through everything. A very thick case, or one with a metal plate, a metal ring or a card in it, weakens the hold or stops the charge. If the phone is not sitting properly, suspect the case before the charger.
Why we do not quote more numbers
You will see other pages quoting a figure for each pad, certifications, and charging times in minutes. We state what the supplier states for this unit: 15W, and USB-C. A number we print becomes a promise we have to keep, and we have not opened these and measured.
Common questions
- What is the difference between the flat and the upright charger?
- The charging is identical: three magnetic pads and 15W on both. The difference is posture — the flat one keeps the phone lying down and folds smaller, the upright one holds the phone at eye level so the screen stays usable while it charges.
- Does a magnetic charger work through a phone case?
- Through most cases, yes. A very thick case, or one with a metal plate, a metal ring or a card inside it, weakens the hold or stops the charge. If the phone will not sit properly, the case is usually why.
- Does it come with a power adapter?
- It arrives with a USB-C cable. The wall plug is not part of the box with most suppliers and we are not claiming it for this unit. A recent iPhone or iPad adapter is enough.
