Dark spots in a sunny country: why they come back, and what stops them
16 October 2026
Treating dark spots without sunscreen is bailing out a boat without plugging the hole. Why the sun is half the equation, and how long it actually takes.
A dark spot is not dirt and it is not a scar. It is extra pigment the skin produced as a defence — against sun, or against an earlier inflammation such as a spot.
Why they always come back
The cells that made the pigment are still there, and they respond to light. Every new exposure asks them to work again. That is why marks fade in winter and return in summer for a lot of people, with no change of product.
Sunscreen is not an extra step here — it is the treatment
Any product for marks works from one side while the sun works from the other. Without daily sunscreen, the best serum in the world is running on the spot. And this is not a general remark: in Saudi the radiation is strong most of the year, and it comes through car and window glass.
How long it takes
Two to three months before a real difference shows, sometimes longer. Anything promising two weeks is selling you an expectation that will not arrive. Old marks are slower than new ones.
What actually helps
- Sunscreen every morning, reapplied if you are outdoors
- Ingredients that slow pigment production — retinal, vitamin C and niacinamide sit here
- Renewing the surface with limited exfoliation, not aggressive exfoliation
- Patience, which is the hard part
And what makes them worse
- Picking or squeezing spots — the mark after the inflammation outlives the spot itself
- Harsh exfoliation, because the inflammation produces pigment of its own
- Heat. Not only sun: an oven, a kitchen, a sauna will trigger pigment in some skin
Marks after spots are a special case
The red or brown trace left by a spot fades on its own with time in most cases — but sun fixes it in place. Protecting a fresh mark from light does more than any serum.
And when it is a dermatologist's question
Deep, settled patches, or wide symmetrical areas across the cheeks. That is a different category with treatments that are not sold on a shelf, and anyone promising otherwise is selling you something.
Common questions
- Why do dark spots come back after fading?
- Because the pigment-producing cells are still there and they respond to light. Every new sun exposure asks them to work again, which is why marks fade in winter and return in summer.
- How long do dark spots take to fade?
- Two to three months before a real difference, sometimes longer, and old marks are slower than new ones. Anything promising a result in two weeks is selling an expectation that will not arrive.
- Is a serum enough without sunscreen?
- No. The serum works from one side and the sun from the other. Without daily sunscreen the mark stays where it is however good the product, and the radiation reaches you through car glass.
