Retinol or retinal? One letter apart, and not the same thing

22 September 2026

One letter apart, but they do not work at the same speed or suit the same skin. Which to start with, and how to introduce it without peeling.

The two names look so alike that most people read them as the same ingredient. The real difference is how many steps the skin needs to convert it into the form that does the work.

What the difference means in practice

  • Retinol takes two conversions inside the skin before it acts
  • Retinal takes one, so it shows earlier
  • Fewer steps means faster, and also more likely to irritate at the start

Which to begin with

If this is your first time with vitamin A, begin with retinol. Retinal suits skin that has already got used to it.

How to introduce it without peeling

  • Twice a week for the first fortnight, then build up
  • At night only
  • Moisturiser after it, every time, and sunscreen in the morning without exception
  • Do not pair it with a strong acid on the same night

A little flaking at the start is expected. Painful peeling or redness that does not settle is not — go back to fewer nights rather than pushing through.

Vitamin A works over the long run. The result is measured in months, not days, which is why the product you keep using beats the stronger one you abandon.

What goes on top, and what does not go with it

A retinoid needs moisture over it, not instead of it. An overnight mask that seals and stops water evaporating is the simplest thing that softens the flaking of the first few weeks. And what does not belong on the same night: a strong exfoliating ampoule. Skin after a retinoid is exposed, and an active on top of it lands harder than it should. Put them on different nights.

Common questions

What is the difference between retinol and retinal?
Retinal is one conversion step closer to the form skin actually uses, so it shows results sooner than retinol — and is more likely to irritate at first.
Which should I start with if I have never used vitamin A?
Start with retinol, twice a week at night, with moisturiser after and sunscreen in the morning, then build up. Move to retinal once your skin is used to it.
Can retinol be used in the morning?
Night is better. Vitamin A raises sun sensitivity, which is why morning sunscreen is not optional alongside it.
